Tom Hanley, Middlebury Police Chief, hosted 6 members of law enforcement from the Republic of Georgia, who were visiting and learning about the United States criminal justice system.  The Chief gave them an overview of policing in a small community such as Middlebury with emphasis on Community Policing.

Georgia is a Republic bordered by the Black Sea in the west, by Turkey and Armenia in the south, by Azerbaijan in the east, and Russia in the north. The republic also includes the Abkhazia and Ajara autonomous republics and South Ossetia.

The visiting police officials were here as part of a program of PH International (formerly Project Harmony) which is headquartered in Waitsfield, Vermont with a second office in Leningrad Russia. PH International is a global organization with over 20 years of experience working with people, communities, governments, corporations, and proven tools to bring cultures together, encourage peer learning, and building of strong communities.

Middlebury is not new to visitors as part of the work with Project Harmony.  In the early 1990’s police officers from Russia visited the Middlebury Police Department and in the mid 1990’s, a group interested in the arts from Azerbaijan were in the Middlebury Memorial Day Parade prior to visiting Middlebury College.
