The National FFA Association is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. FFA is an integral, intracurricular part of education and hands-on career exploration. FFA programs and activities help members develop public speaking skills, conduct and participate in meetings, manage financial matters, strengthen problem solving abilities and assume civic responsibilities. Nearly 450,000 members participate on local, state and national levels in approximately 7,275 chapters.

The Vergennes chapter of FFA would like to tell you about some projects that we have been going on this year. We started off this school year with 15 members taking a trip to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. We took one of our school buses and really enjoyed a stop along the way at the Mason Dixon Farm. They have some of the most modern technology of any dairy farm. They have automatic milking machines to milk the cows, a custom built forage chopper with tracks, and over 2,000 head of cattle.     Our next big event was our citrus fundraiser sale, which helps pay for our activities. We sold a lot of cases of oranges and grapefruit.

Last week we went to the Barre Farm Show at the Barre Civics Center. There were a several schools that competed there.

Our Dairy Foods team won its competition, and AnnaJo Smith took first place individually.

Still to come is our Tractor and Dairy Day at the VUHS. Members of the FFA chapter will drive tractors to school, and we hope to have cows and calves out behind the school. We will invite local elementary school students to learn about dairy farming in Vermont.

Thank you for reading,
Vergennes FFA
