F. Winston Swain

New Haven - F. Winston Swain, 89 passed away Friday January 15, 2010 at Ringer Home Care in Vergennes.

    He was born January 23, 1920 in New Haven the son of Quincy and Flora Ravlin Swain.

    He attended Beeman Academy for 10 years in New Haven and then he graduated from VT Technical College in 1938. He married Isabelle Allen in 1942 and they owned and operated a dairy farm in New Haven for over 25 years. He also worked for Hiram Monroe, where he drove dump trucks and transported heavy equipment, Brush Motors, and Brush Texaco.  He retired from Foster Motors at age 70.  He was a member of New Haven Congregational Church and Evergreen Cemetery Association.

    He was predeceased by his wife Isabelle (Allen) Swain on March 23, 2008.

    He is survived by three children, Candace Grennon Swain and fiancé Bernie Noble of New Haven, Crystal Armell and Clyde of Charlotte, Allen Swain and Susan of New Haven; 9 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and  a life long friend Madeline Roleau.  Predeceased by a brother Hoyt Swain and a sister Mattie Bartlett.

    The family wishes to express special thanks to his caregivers Janelle Vincent, Kim Farnham, and Mike Sullivan.

Beatrice Butterfield Santerre

Bristol - Beatrice Butterfield Santerre, 87 passed away Friday January 15, 2010 at Charles and Alice Barnum Home in New Haven.

    She was born March 7, 1922 in Starksboro the daughter of James and Zilpha Monroe Stokes.

    She was a member of United Church of Lincoln.

    She married Francis Butterfield on December 30, 1938 he predeceased her July 17, 1983. Then she married Charles Santerre on November 14, 1992 and he predeceased her on October 18, 2004.

    She was active in First Baptist Church in Bristol for many years and in later years she was active in the United Church of Lincoln.

    Beatrice is survived by two children, Brenda Blaise and husband Reginald of Bristol; Gail Bernard and her husband Randall of Jonesville; two grandchildren Christopher Blaise and wife Alannah of Colorado, Marie Ayer and husband Thomas of Hinesburg; three great grandchildren Jordan, Kianna, and Elise Ayer; a brother Sheldon Stokes and companion Doris of Florida; a sister Lulu Bobar of Springfield, VT; two step daughters Barbara Hayes of Texas, Charlene Bombard of Milton; several nieces and nephews and many good friends.

    Funeral services was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday January 19th at Lincoln United Church. Interment will be in Maple Cemetery in Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to United Church of Lincoln, 23 Quaker St. Lincoln, VT 05443.

Roderick Davis Murray

Jeffersonville - Roderick David Murray, 60,passed away during the early hours of Sunday, January 3, 2010, at the Fletcher Allen ICU following a short fight with an aggressive cancer.

    Roderick was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 30, 1949, son of Dorcas (Pinkerton) Murray (deceased) and Chandler Murray. A 1968 graduate of MUHS, he attended the University of Oregon and Castleton State College. He revealed his immense talent and creativity as a carpenter very early on and was a respected independent residential builder for over 40 years. As an avid reader and observer of the world, he was a man of exceptional intellect. He made friends throughout America and in Scotland, his ancestral homeland for which he had a special affinity. He was a gentle soul who loved bagpipe music, being of service to others, peaceful walks in the woods with his dog Mathias and living simply. He had an adventurous spirit which sought to understand the world.

    He is survived by his wife, Paschal; his father, Chandler of Middlebury; his sister Heather Bellanca and husband Jay of Salem, NY and brother, Christopher and wife Jane of Chandler, AZ; his nieces and nephews and many, many friends. There was a memorial service for friends and family at the Middlebury Community House, on March 21, 2010, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and/or the animal shelter of your choice.

Dorothea (Little) Maroney

Bennington/Salisbury- 1917-2010  Dorothea A. Maroney, 92, a resident of Bennington, died on Sunday morning, January 10, 2010, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

   Born in Leominster, Mass. on April 30, 1917, she received her education in Salisbury where she had lived with her grandparents, Alvin and Hattie Little since she was 6 days old. She graduated from Middlebury High School in 1934.

   For many years, Dorothea was employed at Tansitor Electronics in Bennington.

   She was a member of the Bennington Moose Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary in Bennington.

   She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and her family. She would often feed the local cats in the neighborhood.

   She leaves her daughter, Beverly Leake of Bennington, and her son, H. Kent Wright III of Bridport, her grandchildren, Cheryl Freeman and Virginia Flewelling of Nashua, N.H., Michael Belanger of Goffstown, N.H., Catherine Buonantuono of Odenton, Md., Aubrey H. Leake III of Lowell, Mich., H. Kent Wright IV of Middlebury, Suzi Wright Barringer of Roanoke, Va., Cindy Wright Myrick of Bridport and Jerry Wright of Shoreham, Vt. as well as several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her house friend, "Sammy the Cat".

   She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Maroney, and a sister, Marjorie Kosack.

   Private funeral services, at her request, were held.

   Bearers were Michael Belanger, Aubrey Leake, Jerry Wright, Greg Flewelling, John Buonantuono and Michael Joseph Briand.

   The Mahar and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the service and internment.
