When Brooke Connor was seven years old she attended a Junior Miss Competition with members of her family and her history club. Watching the competition, Brooke leaned over to her club mentor and asked, “What are they trying to win?” Her advisor responded, “College scholarships to help pay for their education.” Brooke thought a moment and said, “I want to do that do. Someday I will be Vermont’s Junior Miss.”

On January 15th, at Green Mountain High School in Chester, Vermont, Brooke fulfilled her plan and became Vermont’s Junior Miss for 2010. Part of a competition that is based on  Scholastics, Fitness, Interview, Talent, and Self-Expression, Brooke took home top honors and earned the right to represent Vermont at the national level competitions in Mobile, Alabama.

Founded in 1958, America's Junior Miss is headquartered in Mobile, Alabama.  More than 700,000 young women from across the nation have participated in Junior Miss programs at the local, state, and national levels.  In addition to cash scholarships, Junior Miss participants are eligible for college-granted scholarships from nearly 200 colleges and universities. America’s Junior Miss is open to girls in their senior year of high school and stresses a program called Be Your Best Self. BYBS emphasizes five elements: Be Healthy, Be Studious, Be Responsible, Be Ambitious, and Be Involved. Junior Misses make appearances across the country to share the message of the BYBS program and encourage young people to implement these five elements in their own lives.

There are no fees to enter the Junior Miss Program and in addition Brooke’s two week stay in Mobile, Alabama will be paid in full. There she will have the opportunity to meet and get to know 49 other teenagers from around the nation that reflect the same values that include community, academics, and family.

The Valley Voice salutes Brooke and looks forward with interest to her trip to Mobile and her role as Vermont’s Junior Miss for 2010.
