HELEN REED FOSTER

MIDDLEBURY - Helen Reed Foster, 91, of Middlebury, passed away at her home, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s Disease.

    Helen was born August 9, 1918 in Fair Haven, VT the daughter of Roland L. and Bernice (Douglas) Reed.

    Helen graduated from the University of Vermont in 1940 and then taught Home Economics in Orleans, VT.  In 1944 she married Howard C. Foster and moved to Middlebury where they have lived for the past 65 years.  

    Helen was a remarkable wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all.  Over the years she has been very active in the Congregational Church of Middlebury, the Women’s Fellowship, the Kings Daughters organization and was a great supporter of 4-H. Helen devoted her life to her family and enjoyed sewing, needlework and the family garden.

    Family includes her husband of 65 years, Howard C. Foster of Middlebury. Her loving children include;
     Son, Robert Foster and his wife Nancy and children, Heather Foster-Provencher and her husband Larry, and their children Tyler and Krisandra; Jennifer Foster and husband Sam Zucker and their children Isaac and Zalman; Robin Foster-Cole and husband David Cole and their children, Aiden and Nyna;
    Daughter, Judy Roy and her husband Bill and their children, Amanda and husband Sean Palmer; and Eric Roy.
     Son,  Jim Foster, Sr. and wife Joyce, and their children, Karen Foster-Baccei and husband David; Jim Foster, Jr. and wife Tricia and their children MaKayla and Caleb ; Mark Foster and wife Nicole and their children, Ashlynn and Colin.
    Daughter, Sharon Foster-Chalecki and husband Robert Chalecki and their children Tracy Chalecki, Rob Chalecki and his wife Robin and their children Madline and Theo.
    Daughter, Dorothy Douglas and her husband, Vermont Governor Jim Douglas and their children Matt Douglas and his wife Keri and their son Timothy; Andrew Douglas and Courtney Bowers.
    Daughter, Joyce Wetmore and her husband David and their children Rebecca, Christopher and Allyson.
    Sister Lois Foster and her husband, Ben;
    Sister-in-laws Luella Wolfreys and Jean H. Foster;
    Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family gratefully expresses their thanks for the care given by Happy Hearts and Addison County Home Healthcare and Hospice during Helen’s illness.   

    A Celebration of Helen’s life was held at 2 PM Sunday at the Congregational Church of Middlebury, 27 North Pleasant St., with the Rev. Andrew Nagy-Benson, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will be at a later date in Foote Street Cemetery, Middlebury.

    The family suggests  that  memorial donations be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753; Kurin Hatten Home, P.O. Box 127 Westminister, VT 05158, or to The Congregational Church of Middlebury, 27 North Pleasant St. Middlebury, VT 05753

    Arrangements are under the direction of Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, Middlebury.

RONALD G. SPERRY, JR.

HUNTINGTON - Ronald G, Sperry, Jr., 63, died Monday, November 23, 2009 at Fletcher Allen Healthcare, Burlington, VT.

    Born in Burlington July 8, 1946, he was the son of the late Ronald G. Sperry, Sr. and Amelia (Acebo) Sperry.  

    After graduating from Middlebury Union High School in 1964, Ron joined the Vermont Army National Guard and served with the 131st Engineers in Vietnam from 1968-1969.

    Upon his return, Ron worked Broughton IBA from 1972 until the mid 1980’s.  He also owned Valley Garage in Shoreham, VT  and worked at G&S Coach , where he enjoyed taking the Vermont Expo’s Baseball Team to their away games.  

    Ron was a member of Middlebury VFW, Post #7823 and Vergennes American Legion, Post 14.

    Mr. Sperry grew up in Cornwall, VT and lived in Shoreham, VT until he moved to Huntington in 1997,.  

    Ron leaves his wife, Marilyn (Johnston) Hinsdale of Huntington; three daughters, Rhonda J. Nichols and Beauzetta L. Sperry, both of New Ispswich, NH and Paula C. Sperry of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth A. Edquid of Colorado Springs, CO; three stepsons, Nathan W. Greer of York, ME, Benjamin W. Greer of Estes Park, CO and Jeffrey W. Hinsdale of Hinesburg; a sister, Deborah Walters of Clarksville, IA; and seven grandchildren.

     Funeral services were conducted at 11 AM Friday, Dec.4, 2009 at the Vermont Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Randolph, followed by military honors and burial.

    The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the cancer charity of one’s choice.

Emogene (Emmy) LaMire Farnsworth

Panton - Emogene (Emmy) LaMire Farnsworth, 88 passed away Sunday November 29, 2009 at Mary Bingham home in Bristol.

    She was an eight generation Vermonter born November 21, 1921 in Wolcott the daughter of Victor and Ada Driscoll LaMire.

    Emmy served in the civil air patrol from 1938 to 1941 at the Burlington airport. She was the 2nd Vermont woman to obtain her pilot license. Emmy also had a radio operators license and parachute riggers rating. She was also in charge of airport security. Emmy joined the US Coast Guard in November 1944 and she was honorably discharged in May 1946. She was a Landing Area Registrar and Clearance Officer from 1940 to 1942.

    Emmy is survived by her husband Ira Farnsworth of Panton; three children, Ira Farnsworth Jr., James S Farnsworth and wife Pamela of Panton, Roger C Farnsworth of Bristol; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister Barbara Sudano; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a brother Ralph Brewster.

    A memorial service was held on Thursday December 3rd at Brown - McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Vergennes Area Rescue Squad PO Box 11, Vergennes, VT 05491.
