Shirley Barrows LeCompte

VERGENNES, VT - Shirley Evelyn Barrows LeCompte, 77, of Vergennes Residential Care in Vergennes, VT died Saturday, November 20 after a long illness at Vergennes Residential. She was surrounded by family and friends at the time of her passing.

    She was born August 1932 in Vergennes, VT, daughter of Earl and Genevieve Panton Barrows. She was raised and educated in Vergennes. After graduation from high school, Shirley attended Lackawanna School in Buffalo, NY for Early Childhood Education. In 1951, she married Marcel LeCompte.

   Shirley worked for Porter Hospital in Middlebury, VT for about 20 years and earned her LPN licensure while working there. She lived and raised her family in Middlebury. Later, she moved to Lee, MA in 1970 and then back to Vergennes in 1973. After her return to Vergennes, she worked at Clark Nursing Home (now Vergennes Residential Care) for nineteen years, retiring in 1992. After her retirement, she and her husband moved to Lee, MA and lived at Brown Memorial for three years before returning, again, to her home town of Vergennes.

   Shirley enjoyed camping. She and her husband had a close group of friends with whom they camped each summer and visited nightly around a relaxing campfire. She also was an avid gardener who canned many fresh vegetables. Her family celebrated many holiday dinners prepared by Shirley. She was an accomplished cook and enjoyed it very much. One of her favorite activities was playing cards with family and friends. She always had change in her pocket for a good game of 21 or Blackjack.

   She leaves two sons, Steven and his wife, Ruth (Heath) of Lee, MA; Kevin and his wife Starr (Parnigoni) of Montpelier, VT; and one daughter Carol Cannavan of Hoosick Falls, NY; one sister, Lucille LaFrance of Williston, VT; two brothers, David Barrows of Vergennes, VT and Roland Barrows and his wife Pam of Oro Valley, Arizona; six grandchildren: Erin Hart of Pittsfield, MA and Shannon LeCompte of Nassua, NH; Matthew and Sarah Cannavan of Hoosick Falls, NY; Logan LeCompte of Monkton, VT; and Sawyer LeCompte of Burlington, VT, and two great-grandchildren of Pittsfield, MA, Olivia and Owen Hart.
She was predeceased by her husband, Marcel in 1998.  One sister, Janice Betz; four brothers; Ronald, Clement, Roger, and George Barrows; her son-in-law, B. Kelly Cannavan, and one great-granddaughter, Haley Cannavan also predeceased her.

   Memorial Notice: A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 5 at 12:30 at Fairmont Cemetery in Lee, MA. Following the committal service the family will receive friends at the home of Steven and Ruth LeCompte at 125 Maple St., Lee, MA.
