Vermont Governor James Douglas administered the oath of office and signed the official document making Bennington lawyer David R. Fenster the state’s newest state’s attorney for Addison County.  The 3 p.m. ceremony took place at the Judge Frank J. Mahady Court House in Middlebury, before a gathering of court and law enforcement officials, along with Fenster’s family and friends on Tuesday November 17th 2009.

Fenster replaces John Quinn who served the county as state’s attorney for over 25 years and decided to take a state early retirement offer in August.  Douglas chose Fenster over several candidates who were recommended for the post.

Before the official swearing-in ceremony Douglas called the appointment an “important transition for Addison County,” and thanked Quinn for his “quarter century of service to the citizens of the county.”  Douglas went on to say that the duties of the Vermont State’s Attorneys Offices have helped make Vermont “one of the safest places in America to live, work, play and raise a family.”

Fenster told the gathering that he was looking forward to his new job and is in the process of relocating his family from Bennington County.  Prior to being considered for the new state’s attorney’s post in Addison County, Fenster was practicing as a law partner in the Bennington Vermont law firm of Barr, Sternberg, Moss, Lawrence, Silver, Stonstall & Fenster.

At one point during his tenure as Addison County State’s Attorney, Quinn’s office was rated as #1 in Vermont with the highest conviction percentage in domestic violence cases.
He had been the counties top law enforcement officer since 1985 and before that was Addison County Deputy State’s Attorney from 1978 to 1985.
