First Annual Festival Of Music At Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater

Tuesday May 19, 2009

Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater is getting a reputation as a great place to hear music.  This month, musicians and audiences alike will get the chance to experience its intimate scale and warm sound as the theater hosts its first annual Festival of Music.

The jewel in the crown of the festival is  fully-staged production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, by the Opera Company of Middlebury, directed by Douglas Anderson.  Now in its sixth season, OCM has become one of the premier opera companies in New England, presenting major opera in the intimate confines of Town Hall Theater.

The festival begins with Meet the Singers on Friday, May 22, a chance for people to meet the professional singers who’ve come from all over the country to star in the opera.  The event takes place at historic Middlebury Inn, beginning with an hour-long reception.  Then the crowd moves into the Founders Room for a recital of the singers’ hand-picked arias.

On Wednesday, May 27, there will be a special screening of The Audition, the heralded documentary that follows young performers through the grueling Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions.  THT’s large screen and superb sound system have made it an exciting place to see the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD broadcasts.

On Friday, May 29, The Burlington Chamber Orchestra will present a concert of music by Haydn, Handel and Glazunov , under the direction of Michael Hopkins. The concert will also include the winner of the BCO Composers Competition, and will feature the winner of the BCO Young Artist Competition.

The BCO will be in town because members of the orchestra will be in the pit for The Barber of Seville – something that makes OCM director Douglas Anderson very happy.  “We’ve been working very hard to expand our orchestra and find top-rate players,” says Anderson,  “and then suddenly we have the opportunity to bring in an entire orchestra, one that has played together for several years and is very much admired.  Almost overnight we’ve found ourselves with a really terrific band.”

The Barber of Seville will be performed on June 5, 7, 9, 11.

Tickets for all four events may be purchased on-line at www.townhalltheater.org, or by calling 802 382-9222, or in person at the THT Box Office (Monday-Saturday, Noon-5.)
