Bernard Bronson

Bridport- Bernard H. Bronson was born in Bridport on February 25, 1921, the son of the late Horace A. and Alice (Myrick) Bronson, died on March 30, 2009 at Rutland Healthcare and Rehabilitation.

    He attended schools in Bridport, Shoreham, and Whiting. On September 27, 1943 he married Ellen M. McGinn in a service at St. Bernadette's Church.

    Bernard was a farmer living in Middlebury and Bridport. He was active in his community playing baseball for the Bridport and Panton teams. He drove truck for the town and for LaRocque's trucking. Bernard was a charter member of the Bridport Fire Department, organized in 1948. He served as president of the Addison County Firefighters in 1952, becoming a life member.

    A Grange member for over 70 years, he held several offices including Master in Bridport and offices in Pomona and State Granges serving on the Agriculture and Fair Committees. He was also a member of the Bridport Historical Society and a life member of the Bridport Sno-Birds.

    Bernard is survived by a son, Francis Bronson of Bridport, and a daughter Barbara and her husband Andre Mercier of Bridport. He had four grandchildren who gave him lots of love during his life. Bailey Bronson, who shared Grampa's love of sheep, as well as Jason, Raymond, and Renee Mercier, "Grampa's Shadow".

    He is also survived by brothers Horace A., and wife Joyce of South Burlington, Malcolm and wife Isabelle of Bridport, Thad and his wife Virginia of Bridport, as well as many nieces and nephews.

    He was predeceased by his wife Ellen, his brothers Wymond and Lloyd and a sister Thelma LaRocque.

    A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday April 4, 2009 at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church. The Rev. William R. Beaudin, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Bridport Central Cemetery.

Mildred W. Huckabay

Vergennes - Mildred W. Huckabay went to be with the Lord on Friday April 3, 2009 at the age of 91.

 Mildred was born April 11, 1917, the fourth of six children of Arthur and Delia Willard, in the Mud City area of Morrisville, VT.

 She graduated from People’s Academy in 1933, attended Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, MA and worked for the phone company in Morrisville and Burlington before the war.  During World War II, she served in the U.S. Navy including work as a control tower operator.  After the war, Mildred worked for General Electric in Ludlow, VT, Schenectady, NY and Oakland, CA. In California in 1955, she married George W. Huckabay and they raised their son Bill. In 1970, she returned to school earning a nursing degree and worked for many years in nursing homes in California and Vermont.  In 1987, she retired to Vermont and lived in her parents’ home in Vergennes until 2005.

  Mildred was predeceased by her husband, George, brothers Edgar, Ralph and Keith and sister Gladys.

 She is survived by her sister, Lorraine Parker of Springfield, VT, son Bill Huckabay and his wife Lucie of Vergennes, granddaughter Lisa Huckabay of Alexandria, VA and grandson David Huckabay of Burlington.

 The family would like to extend special gratitude to the wonderful staff of the Vergennes Residential Care Home.

   Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Monday April 6th at Brown - McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes.   In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Addison County Humane Society, 236 Boardman St. Middlebury, VT 05753 or the Addison County Home Health & Hospice Agency, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.
