Let The Good times Roll Mardi Gras Party At Town Hall Theater

Tuesday February 17, 2009

“Laissez le bon temps rouler!” – the carefree motto of  Mardi Gras – will ring through Middlebury on February 24, as Town Hall Theater throws its first Mardi Gras celebration.

The event will feature authentic music, madcap dancing, Cajun food, and the crowning of a Festival Queen and King.  Costumes of any kind are encouraged, with masks, beads and feathers a great place to start.

Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday”, a final blow-out celebration before Ash Wednesday.  Staying as true to the tradition as possible, the THT event will be held on a Tuesday night.  “Something really appealed to us about doing this on a Tuesday night,” said THT executive director Douglas Anderson.  “There’s something crazy, something a little bit wild about dancing and carousing on a Tuesday night, and that’s exactly the spirit of the event.  It’s meant to help you break out of your everyday patterns and do something unexpected and wonderful.”

On the bandstand will be Vermont’s own zydeco band, Mango Jam, which draws its inspiration from the music of South Louisiana and the Caribbean.  The 6-piece group serves up an irresistible mixture of Mardi Gras songs, Cajun, R&B, and reggae.

A special attraction will be dance lessons.  Mike and Rosie Korkuc, known locally as For Left Feet Dance, will be on hand at the beginning of the evening to teach zydeco dance, the Cajun Two-Step and Waltz.

Mardi Gras at Town Hall Theater begins at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 24.  The event benefits THT’s operating expenses.  Tickets are $25, and can be purchased at 382-9222, on-line at www.townhalltheater.org, in person at the THT box office (Monday-Saturday, Noon to 5) or at the door.
