Thursday, February 12 2009, was a big day for the Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury.  Faculty, students and administration presented their annual open house.  The mid-winter event gives the community and parents of students an opportunity to visit the campus and learn first hand about Hannaford’s many programs and opportunities.

The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center is a vital regional community resource and is open to both students and adults.  The center has earned high praise from the business community as it continues to evolve.  In past years The Valley Voice has visited the main campus near MUHS on Charles Ave..
This year we wanted to visit the new North Campus on Mainelli Road off Exchange Street in Middlebury and once again we were not disappointed.

Welcomed to the North Campus by Nancy Slater Cobden, Asst Dir of the Technical Center, we along with many other visitors were also greeted by other members of the faculty and given a tour of the facility.  Phil Teer, Professor of Diesel Technology introduced us to the Diesel Technology shop/classroom with its giant 5-ton overhead electric crane and other machinery.  Phil also explained that students at Vermont Technical College with its main campus in Randolph Vt.,  also attend classes here in Middlebury and that presents an excellent opportunity for  High School students to study hand in hand with college students.
“Many of our High School students can and do receive college credits while studying with us,” Teer explained while guiding us through his immaculate and well lit classroom and shop area.

Next we visited the Automotive Technology shop/classroom and meet briefly with teacher Fred Little.  Fred mentioned that he has been interested in auto-mechanics since he was in grammar school and that his early interest in stock car racing kept that desire to learn more alive.  “The  30 kids that I see every day are great.  “The job is always different, challenging and rewarding every day,” Little explained while showing us a sharp looking 327-Chevy “small block”, being prepared by Senior MUHS student Kyle Odell.   Little’s mechanical knowledge and skills are well known in auto racing circles throughout the Northeast.  His name is usually at the top or close to it at Devils Bowl Speedway in West Haven where he has been track champion multiple times over the years.    Hannaford Career Center’s Open House Showcase was held from 4 to 7 p.m.  Visitors were able to learn what goes on in Agribusiness Technology, Human Services, Construction Technology, Addison Repertory Theater, Forestry/Natural Resources, Industrial Design & Fabrication, Sustainable Landscapes, Food Production, & Turf Management, Automotive Technology, Diesel Power Technology, Culinary Arts, Video Tech Arts, Health Careers, Pre-engineering/Architectural Drafting, Plant & Animal Science, Mechanical Science, Intro to Technology, Visual Communications, and Foundations in Engineering.
