Jean A. (Whittemore) Whitman

Middlebury - Jean A. (Whittemore) Whitman 76,  died quietly at Porter Hospital surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, December 14, 2008.  In death she joins her husband, Raymond, who died earlier in March of this year.

Jean was born December 22, 1931, raised in Ripton, Vermont, the daughter of Harold and Bernice (Billings) Whittemore. She and her two sisters, Patricia Hunter of Lexington, MA and Lorraine Malzac (deceased in 2006) of Middlebury, had a happy childhood learning the ways of nature as they explored the hills and valleys throughout Ripton and around Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf Campus. All the sisters attended the two-room school in Ripton until they transferred to Middlebury in their seventh grades. In high school Jean was active on the softball team (pitcher). Shortly after graduation she married Raymond and settled in Middlebury. She bore and raised four children (Lynn, Gary, Robin, and Scott), all of whom went through the Middlebury schools and settled in Ripton.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Until she became incapacitated Jean was active in the Valley Bible Church of East Middlebury. Her faith was deep and strong. As an avid gardener, one of her special ministries was providing flowers and insuring that worship took place among beautiful surroundings. Also, she loved to cook and was famous for her baked beans, as well as other recipes, all of which she loved to share.

Throughout her life she was a skilled and artistic craftsperson. She knitted beautiful garments for family and friends, made many colorful hooked rugs, and could crochet anything in the dark! In spare moments she was an avid crossword puzzler, and until her final illness, completed jigsaw puzzles of all degrees of difficulty on her kitchen table. Her presence and her talents will be missed.

Jean is survived by a daughter, Lynn Whitman, three sons, Gary Whitman and his wife Donna, Robin  Whitman and his wife Debbie, Scott Whitman and his wife Lisa. Also surviving  are three grandchildren.

A Memorial service will be held in her memory on Friday, December 19 at 1pm at the Valley Bible Church in East Middlebury. In lieu of flowers the family asks that gifts in Jean’s memory be made to Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Assoc, and the Valley Bible Church in East Middlebury.
