Please don't try the following recipe, unless you have a lot of room, a lot of paint, quite a few soccer balls, and a fondness for loud noises. On September 13th, the chefs at Vergennes Union High School cooked up a recipe for Homecoming Fun that was well received by everyone. First you take close to 500 teenagers, add four hay wagons, a bunch of cardboard and paint, themes, rival soccer games, a dance and 38 visiting exchange students from Germany. You bring it all to a slow simmer at a High School Pep Rally, increase to a medium boil during a parade through town, and turn up the heat to full for the soccer games and a dance. The result is a weekend of high spirit, competitive athleticism, and a rare appearance by Commodore McDonough himself. Sponsored by the VUHS Student Council, the event is an annual tradition at VUHS and signals the arrival of fall sports and spirit activities. The Homecoming Festivities capped off a week that included auditions for the 2008 VUHS Musical: Beauty & the Beast, the arrival of the German Exchange Students to stay with their hosts here in Vergennes, and the first rowing team competition in Burlington, Vt. School is very definitely in session!
