Otter Creek Used Book Store is located on Main Street in Middlebury next door to Green Mountain Shoe.  Eighteen months ago, Barbara and Rusty Harding purchased the store.  Barbara explained she “walked by a sign 'USED BOOK STORE FOR SALE.'  I asked how much they wanted to sell it for-we made an offer.” And just like that the Otter Creek Used Book Store was under new management.

Since that time, the Harding's have been dusting, painting and organizing to make this Used Book Store like new.  Entering the store, there is a display area and the unmistakable smell of old books.  As you walk down the staircase you begin to see rows and rows of books from the floor to the ceiling.  The place is packed with a plethora of used books from paperbacks to hardcover collectibles.  And despite the amount of books, the store does not feel claustrophobic, but has a light and airy atmosphere.

The Harding's have been working tirelessly to make this a haven for used book lovers and a resource for the community.  Barbara explains, her goal is  to create a “community used bookstore that serves all people in the community whether they want to buy a paperback or are looking for something specific.” The Harding's goal is make the shop successful and have it “…known as a quality used bookstore.”

Barbara Harding was born in Middlebury, and is very excited to have a store on historical Main Street.  Barbara and Rusty are avid used book shoppers.  “Used books are my personality, open it up and know other eyes have been on the pages.” Barbara explains with smile.  This is also the first time that Barbara has worked for herself, and states, “To own a used book store is amazing.”  Barbara also enjoys the interaction with the customers.  “I like it when people come in and give me feedback.  I feel like customers have taken some ownership of the store.”

If you haven't been in the Otter Creek Used Book Store for a while, or have never been, I encourage you to stop by and see the changes the Harding's have made to the store.  Maybe you'll find some great paperback, your assigned summer reading book, or a treasure you have been searching for.
