Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center Celebration Of Success

The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center held its Celebration of Success on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 7:00pm in the Middlebury Union High School Auditorium. Retiring faculty member, Ann LaFiandra, gave the keynote address. Faculty then presented completion certificates to their respective students. There were eighty students completing their programs this year, in thirteen different programs.
The following students were chosen at Outstanding Program Completers: Hannah Clark (Agribusiness), Abbey Plankey (Addison Repertory Theater - Performance), Robynn Stanley (Addison Repertory Theater - Technical), Thomas Swenor (Automotive), Sean Sullivan (Construction), Katelynn Reising (Cooperative Education), Alex Bishop (Culinary Arts), Michael Hanfield (Diesel Power Technology), Joshua Audy (Forestry), Shepard Kimberly (Sustainable Landscapes), Louise Masterson (Human Services), Kevin Clark (Industrial Design), Travis BetourneyPre-Engineering/Architecture. Benjamin Shaw (Protective Services), and William Nottinham (Video Tech Arts).
Several students received scholarships as part of the ceremony. Marie Eddy, Guidance Coordinator, read the scholarship descriptions as the students received their awards. The following students received scholarships and/or awards:
The Director's Award went to Travis Huestis. Travis was nominated by his Automotive Technology program instructor, Fred Little, in recognition of Travis' dramatic improvement in accomplishment and performance. Lynn Coale, HCC Director, presented the award.
Travis Betourney received the Addison County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship. This scholarship is given to a graduating senior at Hannaford Career Center who has demonstrated outstanding potential to become a contributing, productive citizen and business person. Travis was chosen based on his positive attitude, high level of skill development, involvement in school and community affairs and excellent grades in his program at the Center. Andy Mayer, Executive Director of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, presented the award.
Andrew Warren received the County Tire scholarship, presented to him by the owner, Steve Dupoise. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has excelled in the Automotive Technology program at the Hannaford Career Center, and who is pursuing further education in the field.
Kelsey Weidman received the Vermont Honor Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded by the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation to a student who has shown outstanding academic achievement, typically to a student in the top ten percent of his/her high school class.
Paul Dieman, the Dean of Students, presented two Student Leadership Scholarships to Eric Fifield and Azer Avdagic, for their contribution to the school.
Hannah Clark received the George Foster Memorial Scholarship. The family of George Foster established this scholarship several years ago, to honor a student who has been an active participant in Middlebury FFA.
Kaitlin Mannigan received the Patricia A. Hannaford Memorial Scholarship. This award was created years ago by the family of Patricia A. Hannaford to be given to a student who has achieved excellence in technical education and who has been accepted to a two- or four-year college.
David Verburg received the Charles M. Rowe Agricultural Scholarship. Kathleen Brisson was on stage to present the award. Her family has established this scholarship in memory of her father, to support students in Addison County seeking to own and operate a family farm.
Robynn Stanley received the Judith Sinnock Memorial Award. Adult Education Coordinator, Nancy Cobden, was on stage to present the award. Judy Sinnock was a former teacher at the Center. The award was created by Judy Sinnock's children in her memory, and is given to an outstanding adult student who lives up to Judy's vision of lifelong learning.
Mike Hanfield received the G. Stone Motors/G. Stone Commercial Division Scholarship. Darcy and Todd Stone were on stage to present the award. The Stone family created the scholarship to support a deserving student who is committed to pursuing a career in the automotive/diesel mechanical industry. In addition to the scholarship, the Stones offer guaranteed employment to the recipient upon completion of his post-secondary education and a sign-on bonus after 90 days of employment.
Joshua LaFlam received a scholarship towards his Castleton State College tuition, by virtue of a Hannaford Career Center student submitting a winning video in the Castleton State College/Vermont Public Television's Video Fest this spring. Will Nottingham, a classmate of Joshua's, presented the award, as it was Will's documentary, “Cow Powa,” that won in the competition.
