Vergennes FFA Members Shine

    Vergennes Chapter of FFA Members win many honors at the Vermont FFA State Convention, held in the Burlington area, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.

    Winning the three highest degrees the Vermont FFA Association can award any member were David Verburg with Star Green Mountain Farmer Degree, Joe Marszalkowski with Star Green Mountain Ag. Placement, and Justin Lalumiere with the Star Green Mountain Agribusiness Degree. To win the Star Degrees, members had to submit the best applications based upon their work experience and FFA successes while in FFA. These three members were awarded $350 each for their work and are now eligible to compete in these areas at the Big “E” in September this fall. Winning $250 each for their Proficiency awards were Rachel Steponaitis for Horse Production, Justin Lalumiere with Vegetable Production, and Joe Marszalkowski in Diversified Crop Production.  

    Arie Smits won the Vermont State Star Greenhand Degree for his work in FFA and his work placement during his first year in FFA. Arie also won $50 for first in his Experience Record Book. AnnaJo Smith won $100 for first in FFA Creed Speaking and Arie Smits won $40 for second. AnnaJo and Arie recited from memory the five paragraph FFA Creed to win this honor. The winner of the Creed Speaking will represent Vermont at the Big “E” and the National FFA Convention in the fall.  Justin Lalumiere won first with his Chapter Treasurer's Record Book earning him $50 and Kristine Jackson won second for her Chapter Scrap book. Brittny Buck won a $100 award for Vt. Outstanding Member or the year, Kristine Jackson won an alternate place for a $500 scholarship to the Washington Leadership Conference this summer, and the Vergennes Chapter of FFA won the Sheldon Trophy Award for most improved chapter in Vermont for the year. Heather Osicky was appointed to and spent most of her time working with the Nominating Committee.

    Winning first place in the Vt. FFA Quiz Bowl were Anna Jo Smith, Samantha Marszalkowski, Cody Hawkins, and Arie Smits. Winning third place in Agricultural Mechanics were Justin Lalumiere, Cody Hawkins, Gary Grant, and Joshua West. Second place in Dairy Cattle Evaluation was won by Heather Osicky, Alex Coyle, Jason Marshal. Mason Evarts and James Sullivan won $2000 scholarships to North Western Ohio University for their placing in the Tractor Trouble Shooting event.

    Justin Lalumiere was elected and installed as the Vermont State FFA President for the 2008-09 year and Brittny Buck was elected vice president. Congratulations to all these FFA Members for their hard work.
