Captain ("Cap") Harry F. Wiseman

 

   Capt. Harry F. Wiseman,96 of Middlebury, VT died Friday May 16, 2008 at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington.

   Cap Wiseman was born March 2, 1912 in North Troy, New York (formerly Lansinburgh), the son of the late Captain Roger & Hilda Horton Wiseman.

   Cap was employed by the Sun Oil Company for 37 years, becoming a captain on oil tankers at the age of 21 where he piloted ships on the east coast from Marcus Hook, PA, to the N.Y. Canal System to the Great Lakes. During World War II (1941-1945) he served under the U.S. Coast Guard (Merchant Marines). After his retirement in 1966, Cap started a CB radio repair business called the Captains Radio Shack in Hampton, New Jersey. A CB'er and Amateur Radio operator since childhood, Cap made many friends on the CB channels in the New York, New Jersey and Vermont areas. His early passion for electronics led him to have the first TV set in the Capital District of Albany in 1939. Reporting his program reception helped General Electric & NBC develop their TV's.

   After spending many summers of his youth on Lake Champlain and proposing to his wife Ethel Olga Appenzeller on the shores of Lake Champlain, Cap returned with his wife to the North Country in 1970. Cap's hobby of recording weather data became well known and in 1980 the National Weather Service made him an Official Weather Observer. His ideal location in South Lincoln made him the 3rd highest weather reporting station in the Eastern U.S. Cap retired from the Vermont Acid Rain Monitoring Program and the NWS in April 1995. During those sixteen years he made many friends with news reporters, weather personalities and both local and national weather offices such as Stuart Hall and Sharon Meyer.

   Cap "never knew a stranger" and during his long life met many TV personalities, news correspondents, band directors, and even Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife and his sons just after his election in 1932.He also met Winston Churchhill and Guy Lombardo

   Cap was preceded in death by his wife Ethel of nearly forty years in 1983. He is survived by his companion of 24 years Margaret E. Samuel, his daughter Lynne E. Wiseman of Harpers Ferry, WV, a sister Rowena of Vernon, Texas, a nephew Roger Sargent of Vernon Texas, and niece Jan Euler of Houston Texas.

   Graveside funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Middlebury Ambulance Assn. PO Box 153, Middlebury, VT.

ANGELO CIUFO

   Angelo Ciufo 84, died peacefully at Fletcher Allen Hospital on May 15, 2008 with is family at his side.  He was born on June 2, 1923 in Tufo, Italy, the son of John and Amelia Ciufo.

   Angelo immigrated, with his family, to the United States in 1935.  Angelo was a very proud US Army Veteran of World War II.

  Angelo is survived by his wife, Angelina Emilo Ciufo, children Judy Adams and her husband, Walter of Essex; son Mark Ciufo of Winooski; grandchildren, Katelyn Adams Olson of Hinesburg and Kyle Adams of Denver, CO.  He leaves his brothers Victor of Gerogia and Salvatore of Ludlow, VT and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Tony and sister, Rita.

    A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated  on Saturday May 17 , 2008 at  St. Mary’s Catholic Church Middlebury with the Rev. Justin Baker , Pastor, officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Middlebury.

Raymond (Barney) Torrey

Addison-Raymond (Barney) Torrey 81 passed away Tuesday May 20, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born November 29, 1926 in Addison, the son of Merton and Ella Wrisley Torrey.

   He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Bridport for 61 years, where he was married to Ramona Murray Nov. 29, 1947, received his Baptism, Communion, and his confirmation. He was a dairy farmer in Addison until his retirement in 1990 due to health reasons. Then he and Ramona started to go to Florida and they had the best of two worlds Florida in the winter and Vermont in the summer. He enjoyed his vegetable gardens in the summer and shared his vegetables and enjoyed giving them to many friends in Vermont and Florida. His passion was fishing, great collector of things he thought were useful, jack of all trades, doing for others and lending a helping hand.

   Barney is survived by his wife Ramona Torrey of Addison; four children, Suzanne and Rene Many of Addison; Michael and Candy Torrey of Panton; Mark and Gayle Torrey of Addison; Raymond Jr. and Rose of Bridport; 22 grandchildren Hebert Glidden IV, Mathew and Laura Glidden, Peter, Timothy, and Joseph Glidden, David Torrey, Stacey Ann Snay, Stacey Elaine Torrey, Wendy, Dana, Shelley, Paul, Joshua, Caitlin, Travis,Geoffrey Strong, Alex and Aaron Torrey, Kerri and Tony Kakiel, Holly and Michael Boise, Monte and Ryan Many, 11 great grandchildren; a brother Merton Torrey, two sister-in-laws, Iola Torrey and Mary and Ted Arel, several nieces and nephews, "Barney's Girls" Sheila Larrow, Juanita Sheldon and Linda Adaniates; special God children Debbie Price and Bradley Arel.

   The family is forever greatful for the numerous caregivers who provided excellent care and special thanks to Kathy LaFramboise, Kenneth Nicholson, and Laura Goodsoh who were a comfort to family and friends.

   A mass of Christian burial wias celebrated  on Saturday May 24th at St. Bernadette Church in Bridport. Interment will be Grand View Cemetery in Addison.  Contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice PO Box 758, Middlebury, VT 05753, or Addison County Meals on Wheels, 112 Exchange St., Middlebury, VT 05753.

Charles Ira Lafley

Bristol/New Haven - Charles Ira Lafley, 72, passed away at Helen Porter Nursing Home after several months with a lingering illness.

    Charles was born March 19, 1936 in Enosburg Falls, the son of Kenneth C. Lafley and Mary Norton Lafley.

    He graduated from Bristol High School class of 1954.  He then attended Saint Michael’s College.

    For many years he was very active in the Bristol Alumni Ass. and held several offices.

    He worked at Simmonds Precision and then moved to New York City to work for the Bulava watch company, then on to IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY.  After 10 years he decided there was no place like home.  He worked for Creative Sound several years, then 10 years with Prudential Ins. Co.  He then worked for Heritage in Burlington and retired in 2004.

    He met the love of his life in 1974 and was soon married.  He was predeceased by his mother mary and father Kenneth.  He leaves his wife Sandra J. Lafley and two stepsons, Michael LaDuc and wife Cherel, and Scott LaDuc and partner Karen Williams; and two daughters, Michelle LaDuc, and Kathleen Almeida and husband Steven; also two grandchildren, Sadie LaDuc of London, England, and Daniel LaDuc of San Antonio; and a sister Linda Lafley of Greensboro, SC; also many dear cousins.

    He was a member of Sons of the American Legion of Vergennes, lifetime member of St. Ambrose Church, and the Bristol Alumni Association.

    A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27th at St. Ambrose Church in Bristol.  Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol.  There will be no calling hours.  Donations may be made to the Helen Porter Nursing Home, South St., Middlebury, VT 05753.
