Counseling Service Breaks Ground for New Building Projects

Tuesday April 15, 2008

A groundbreaking was held this morning at Catamount Park in Middlebury to mark the beginning of construction on two major building projects for the Counseling Service of Addison County.

The groundbreaking featured representatives from the agency's staff and its Board of Directors as well as Naylor and Breen Builders, contractor for the projects. Special guests included Governor Jim Douglas and John Goodrow representing Senator Patrick Leahy, who has secured a Federal earmark to assist the agency.

The larger of the two building projects is a new 18,500 square foot building to be constructed in Catamount Park, adjacent to a smaller structure built by the Counseling Service in 2003. This new building will house the agency's developmental services programs and its administrative offices, freeing up all of the smaller building for programs serving children and adolescents.

In addition, the agency will construct a two-story addition of about 2,400 square feet at the back of its downtown office at 89 Main Street. The addition will provide additional accessible offices, a larger group room, and an elevator to improve access to much of the existing building.

Both of these projects will provide greatly improved physical access for clients and staff, a better working environment, enhanced energy efficiency, and improved communication and coordination among the agency's programs. This will help the Counseling Service better fulfill its mission of providing the highest quality mental health and developmental services to the people of Addison County.

These building projects have been made possible in part through a successful capital campaign, which raised over $680,000. The total cost of the projects will approach $4 million, with the difference to be financed from other agency funds, the sale of an existing property on Court Street, and a 30-year bond arranged through the State of Vermont.  The Counseling Service extends warm appreciation to the people of Addison County and especially the more than 400 who contributed their financial support to the capital campaign.
