On Saturday, April 5th, VUHS history teacher Cookie Steponaitis was awarded the 2008 NEA Educator of the Year Award. The Award is based on the criteria of fostering a love of history, historical research, and encouragement for participation in the Vermont and National History Day competition. " Mrs.Step", as she is known at VUHS, has been involved with historical research and performance based assessments for over 20 years. Her students in the classroom and in the Otter Creek Basin Student History Club research and produce videos, books, performances and special projects all year long. Working with the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, International Lions Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and other civic organizations, the students have competed in ten different history, research and speech competitions this year, involving a total of 100 different students. Congratulations Cookie.
