Vergennes Chapter Of FFA Members Win Eevents At Vermont Farm Show

   Members of the Vergennes Chapter of FFA won many honors at the State FFA Competitions at the Vermont Farm Show held in Barre, VT, January 30, 2008. Most will advance to national competitions this fall.

   Winning first place individual in the State Dairy Foods Quality event was Alex Coyle with Kristine Jackson placing second, Arie Smits third, and Joshua West placing forth. Mason Evarts is also a member of this first place team. To win this event, students had to detect flavor defects in milk, identify cheeses, test milk using the California Mastitis Test, evaluate sediment disks, distinguish between dairy and non dairy products, and answer questions about milk production and marketing. The Vermont Dairy Industry Association runs and sponsors the event.

   Placing first individually in  the Agricultural Sales event was Brittny Buck followed by AnnaJo Smith and Samantha Marszalkowski tying for second. This event required members to make a sales presentation to a panel of judges, develop a news paper sales add, and answer 50 questions about sales. This sales event is sponsored by Poulin Grain, Inc.

   The winners of the Sales and Dairy Foods events will be competing at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, MA and the National FFA Convention to be held at Indianapolis, IN. this fall.

   Winning second place in the Agricultural Business Management event was Justin Lalumiere with Garrett Holler placing forth. The business management team with Justin, Garrett, David Hawkins, Joe Jerger, and Jason Marshall placed second. . This event gave members the opportunity to show their skills in deciding what equipment to purchase or business activities to adopt, securing loans, and analyzing a business for profitability. Bourdeau Brothers, Inc. sponsor the Farm Business Management Event.

   Arie Smits won a Best in Show and $70 for his hay entry in the Farm Show Ag. Products contest along with excellents on two other products. Justin Lalumiere was awarded $40 for his entries in home products. Samantha Marszalkowski, AnnaJo Smith, Joshua West, Brittny Buck, and Alex Coyle received excellent awards for their entries in the products contest.
