Vermont Teen to Compete in Nashville

Tuesday July 3, 2007

One might think that the Connor's vehicle could navigate the road to Nashville on its own. After all, the family has made the trip three times in the past four years. One might think that the newest and youngest member of the Connor family to compete, Erin, would know the ropes and already be packed. One can certainly know for certain that Vermont is in good hands as Erin Connor sets off to represent VUHS at the Miss National Teenager Scholarship Competition from July 18-July25th. Erin currently hold's the title of Miss Vermont Pre-Teen and has earned the right to represent the state at a national level.

Erin is no stranger to competitions and also holds state and national titles in speech and history. What makes this competition different for Erin is its focus on public speaking, academic excellence and community service. “It really is exciting to meet teens from all over the country, she commented. I like that people learn about Vermont and what a special place we live in. They seem surprised that I can feed calves, milk a cow, drive a tractor, and yet still love to read, research and compete in on stage competitions. I went to this competition each time my sisters held the titles of Miss Vermont National Teen and Miss Vermont Jr. National Teenager. I am really looking forward to this. It will be fun.”

While Erin's summer also includes fun activities like the birth of the first family grandchild, hunting for bugs, playing softball and just being a kid, she is also competing not only in Nashville, but in Spokane, Washington at the national level of the Fraternal Order of Eagles God, flag & Country speech competition.

There are a lot of opportunities available for teens in the area of history, speech and scholarship competitions. If anyone is interested in more information, contact the Otter Creek Basin History Club at (802) 877-2938 ext. 239., or get a hold of Erin herself in Bridport.
