Governor Douglas Let Down State Once Again

By vetoing H.520, the energy global warming bill, he has signalled that he would rather protect the interests of large corporations than those of individual Vermont taxpayers.  According to Douglas, he vetoed the bill because it would "unfairly" tax Vermont Yankee and renege on a deal he gave to Vermont Yankee in 2003 that would freeze their property taxes.  According to a recent article in the Burlington Free Press by Representative Margaret Cheney, Vermont Yankee paid $1 million less in property taxes in 2007 than it paid seven years ago.

My question is, why did Douglas give this sweetheart deal to Vermont Yankee in the first place?  He's the one who has been proclaiming incessantly that Vemonters property taxes are too high.  It strikes me as hypocritical that Douglas is giving special deals on property taxes to one of the state's biggest businesses.  It's not rocket science to figure out if they are not paying their fair share of taxes, the rest of us are paying more.  How can we trust our governor when he is giving this kind of deal to large corporations while chastising the rest of us for spending too much for our local schools.

The fact is, H.520 is expected to save Vermonters a great deal of money through increased energy efficiency.  Furthermore, it will help our state do its part in reducing carbon emissions and begin to slow global warming.

I urge the Vermont legislature to override Governor Douglas' veto on July 11, and I urge all citizens to get in touch with your legislators and give them the same message.
