New Miss Vermont Crowned

Tuesday June 12, 2007

Rachel Ann Cole, 21, of Middlebury was crowned Miss Vermont 2007 at St. Michael’s College on Sunday evening.  Cole just finished her junior year at Middlebury College and performed a classical monologue in her quest for victory.

Cole has chosen “Building Bridges through Literacy:  Closing the Educational Gap” as her platform for her year of service.  She states:  “My sincere hope is that after my year of service as Miss Vermont, school-age children and their families, teachers and mentors, state officials and community members will feel the presence of literacy in their lives, and the significant and positive impact of the Miss America Organization.  Addressing inequality square in the eye, Vermonters will find a new hope for the education of future generations, regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic status.”

Cole will be representing the state at the Miss America pageant in January.  In the meantime, she has a great deal she plans to accomplish:  “This is the time to take a constructive step in the education of our nation.  Everyday more children and their families lose hope for the future as those living under the poverty threshold are shuffled through the system.  I have a plan for these families to be proactive and to do it successfully.  Literacy is the key to education and education is the door to success; I am here, with the aid of the Miss America Organization, to open that door.”

The mission of the Miss Vermont organization is to promote personal and professional development, civic consciousness, service, higher education, and integrity. The organization is lead by three previous Miss Vermont titleholders, all of whom are native Vermonters.  To learn how you can become a contestant, volunteer, support the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization, or book an appearance with Miss Vermont, visit www.missvermont.org

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation’s leading achievement programs and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Each year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local affiliates make available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. Rich in history and significance, the Miss America Organization is a not-for-profit organization that has maintained a tradition for many decades of empowering young women to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing them with a forum in which to express their opinions, talent and intelligence.
