When The Bell Tolls A Tribute To Bob Jenkins

There is a moment at the Addison County Firefighters Association Annual Dinner that brings over 300 men and women to silence and many to tears. There is the bell ringing ceremony for those firefighters who have answered their final calls on this earth and gone home for the last time. In solemn procession the ACFA Fire Honor Guard carries the American flag, the tools of a firefighter and the room comes to attention.

As the full hustle and bustle of the holiday season commences, Santa has a legion of helpers. Wearing the uniforms of the US Postal Service, UPS, Fed Ex and others, it is estimated that Americans will send and receive a staggering 15 billion packages and letters between December 5th and December 31st. Moving this incredible number of wishes, gifts and purchases is a well-oiled machine of people, trucks, airplanes that work round the clock to make the holidays go off without a hitch.

At the conclusion of the Christmas classic A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge not only finds his Christmas joy, but vows to the visiting spirits to keep it all year long. While Dickens had his Scrooge, if we are lucky, we know someone who keeps the love of people and the holidays all year long and burning bright enough to squash even the most avid “bah-humbug” people among us. For the Vergennes community and in particular for almost twenty-five years of students at VUHS the Christmas lady was Fran Allo.
