Sharing Memories with Liberia Grasso: Just Past the Century Mark & Going Strong

    Liberia Grasso can’t figure out what the fuss is all about. Just because she was born on October 4, 1905, doesn’t mean everyone needs to get all excited. “I told everyone when I turned 100, that’s it! But here I am 104 still going and still going strong.” She was born in Italy and only one year old when her family immigrated to America. Liberia doesn’t feel her story is unique or worth all the attention. “I have lived in several places,” she remarked, “but none as green as Vermont.” During her long life, Liberia has lived in Philadelphia, Boston and around New England.  [ more ]

Photography Of Tad Merrick At Town Hall Theater

    Many know Tad Merrick as the commercial photographer who, for nearly thirty years, has captured the most treasured moments of lives and community, including weddings, graduations, and alumni gatherings, and who is a fixture on Main Street, complete with his own special at the bakery.  However, a new exhibit of his work, opening at the Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater on Friday, August 14, focuses on work that represents Merrick’s personal artistic vision.

    I approached the assignment of doing a story on The Magic Wok, the new restaurant near A&W south of Middlebury on Route 7, with some apprehension.    Would the owner or manager be willing to talk? Would I understand him or her? Would I have to concentrate on the business details because the food was the same greasy stuff that most Chinese restaurants are dishing out, using menus that look like they came from the same distributor, who might have  delivered many of the items in large cans?  [ more ]
